A Riot of Color

I’ve been waiting for one free moment: an opportunity to spin up the wild overdyed fiber I have been thinking about since our guild’s dye day last month. With classes (and grading) finally finished, and winter break upon us, I found my chance. During a spinning hang-out this week, I brought out the wheel and the fiber and made a decision about how to spin: a fractal, methinks. But after seeing the wild colors on the bobbin, Debbie and Sue mentioned that I might want to ply with a solid color to subdue the business of the single. I tend to agree, but I am also very, very curious. So, here’s the plan . . .

Spin three samples:

  1. 1) a singles just fresh from the bobbin
  2. 2) a fractal version, which means spinning up a bit of the longer repeats from the bigger bumps of fiber
  3. 3) a 2-ply with another single that’s analogous, but less riotous.

What do you all think? Advice? It’s getting wild around here!

I would love to see a 2-ply – I think it would be a very interesting color combination!

Can not really offer any advice as I know nothing about spinning but I can say I love that riot of colour and it would be lovely to knit with 🙂 Have a very happy new year!

What about Navajo plying it to keep the colour progression but not loose the intensity of the colours?

  4. What beautiful dyeing. I unfortunately have no specific ideas, but perhaps I’m a bit partial to 3). Then again, 1) is one way to start 2017 off with a riotous bang of colour! 🙂 Either way, the colours here are incredibly alive and beautiful! Happy spinning!

I love wild and those colors just bounce off that fiber brilliantly. But if you’re not sure you’re going to enjoy the bright skein, I’m with your spinning buddies, you can tone it down some by doing a two ply with a solid single. Orrrrrrrrrrr … you can live dangerously and see where your sampling takes you. 😉

    • Thanks, Nicky! Yes, I have a feeling I’ll like the wild-side of this spin. But, maybe the knitterly-me will calm things down, knowing that things tend to knit up in different ways if they are better balanced 🙂

I predict a riot , I predict a riot ….. it all depends on you preferred finished project look, I’m not a big fan of mixing my handspun dyed tops with a natural. I would love to see the bright skein. But whatever you choose is right for yourself have fun!! 😀
