A couple of weeks ago, I received a text from a friend. My phone, which is NOT hi-tech or smart or intelligent in any way took its time unfurling a photo of . . . a loom!

I have been told by many a spinning (and weaving!) guild member that I would turn to the dark-side eventually; that I would succumb to the pull of weaving and never look back. So, perhaps it was a self-fulfilling prophesy. Plus, my better half–the Amazon reviewer–is already a weaver. We have a huge piece of woven microfilm art hanging in the front room and a bunch of smaller woven pieces (out of paper and grass and whatever else he could find) hanging around the house. I like to tell myself that he is the true weaver and is, therefore, in need of a loom.
Either way, I had to go look at the thing–I mean, we all know I never fail to start BIG and this, well, this was no table loom. We made it to Habitat for Humanity by about 5:45 (they close at 6:00!) and there she was. How could I resist? Good price. Huge loom. Not-for-Profit seller. Husband-weaver by my side. So, yes, dear reader, I bought the loom.
It took us two days to figure out how to get it home (we left our trailer at my dad’s in NY this winter . . . doh!) Thanks to a friend’s *tiny* trailer, we managed to drag it home going about 5 mph–every bump made my heart race.
Nope, we know nothing about weaving. Although we quickly started watching “How to Warp Your Loom” videos and I can happily recommend the following:
- Barbara Elkins (of WEBS) “How to Warp a Loom from Front to Back“
- Barbara Elkins (of WEBS) “How to Wind a Warp“
- Carla Brown’s “Threading a Warp on a Floor Loom“
- Janet Dawson’s Craftsy class “Floor Loom Weaving“
So where do we stand? Well, S is building a raddle and a warp board; we are giving away our piano to make room for the piano-sized loom; and I have assurances from my guildies that someone (maybe Cara, Debbie, or Beth) will come over to help us warp the thing for the first time. In the meantime, I think Spencer is getting a little excited about the prospect of weaving 🙂
Time to get weavin’

I gather that’s your first loom. You are so lucky to start out on such a beauty. Look out for Anne Field’s into book to help you get started. I think it’s particularly good.

What an incredible find! I really want to start weaving this year but I might need to move a few bits of furniture out to fit one of these in. Looking forward to seeing what you make on it.

Thanks! We are parting with our (free) piano this weekend to make room for the loom . . . choices! I hope you find something special out there too!!

You reminded me of how much I miss teaching weaving. I am eager to help you get up and running, or to keep you going. Let me know if you’d like my help. I’m working on producing a set of weaving videos in a few years as a retirement project. 🙂

Your loom reminds me of a Harrisville loom that I used 30-40 years ago. What company made yours?

Hi there! You know, I don’t know the make–there are no markings. I’ve sent pictures to a few manufacturers and they all said “not ours” . . . maybe it’s homemade? as some have suggested? And please keep me posted about the videos! I would love to feature them here!

Thanks 🙂 I’ve been writing scripts, and gleaning information from MOOCs in addition to critiquing what is already available. Very exciting!
