Riot of Color: Sampled

You all might remember my riot of color–the overdyed Fat Cat Knits SW Merino fiber that I was pondering on the bobbin. My guild-mates suggested a mach-up with some solid color; I was originally planning a fractal; and the color of the singles kept surprising me. So, I promised some sampling.

Here is the original fiber, the fiber divided, and a glimpse of bobbin #1:

I’ll talk more about these on this weekend’s podcast. Here, you can see from left to right:

• 2-ply with a dark/black merino
• singles
• 2-ply, Bracelot ply (plied onto itself from end to end)
• 3-ply chain ply
• 3-ply traditional

My favorite so far is the chain ply or the singles. Both maintain more of the solid color runs from the fiber. But, I can see arguments for any of these depending on the project. All were spun on my Ladybug at a 16:1 ratio and plied at a 14:1 ratio. I had 6oz of this fiber to begin with, so I am happy to be using some of it for this experiment, which tells me a lot about how variegated fiber colorways behave on the wheel under different conditions.
